Eighth Annual AJ Davis Pharmacist of the Year Award Announced
Congratulations to Lisa Gunther Lum on being awarded the
AJ Davis pharmacist of the year award for 2008. The AJ Davis award is
presented annually by the Southern California chapter and recognizes a
current member who has made significant, influential, and tangible contributions
to pharmacy practice in California. The award was presented at the SCSHP
annual night with industry and installation banquet on January 19th.
Lisa is currently chairperson of the SCSHP newsletter committee, but has
previously held almost every other position within the chapter including
that of Director and President. At the state level, Lisa is currently
serving as CSHP treasurer and has previously been on the Board of Directors
as well as Chair of the Seminar Management Team. Time and again she has
been asked to serve the society and has willingly dedicated her time and
effort for many years. She has been a major factor in making our society
a success.
Lt. Col. Arthur Davis was a pioneer in the field of pharmacy and SCSHP.
In fact, he helped in the creation of CSHP as an organization and was
president of the Southern California chapter in 1969. He was a consummate
professional who pushed the boundaries of the pharmacy profession at the
VA where he was chief at 6 VA hospitals. In addition, he was a devoted
military soldier and a devoted family man to his wife and children. It
is with great honor that SCSHP bestow an annual Pharmacist of the Year
Award in his name.
Congratulations to Lisa for this well deserving award.

Program gives pharmacists more clout
in patient care
By Julie Appleby, USA TODAY
LOS ANGELES — On this city's Skid Row, where the down-on-their-luck
come for food, shelter and a second chance, pharmacist Steven Chen bustles
into a small examining room at a community clinic. He sits down next to
Floyd McLucas, who has diabetes.
The two talk for more than 25 minutes about McLucas' medication,
his diet and his recent blood sugar test results. Chen then suggests that
McLucas, 58, a former truck driver who lives at a nearby charity mission,
begin taking a drug to lower his cholesterol.
What's unusual about the encounter is not only the amount of time Chen
is able to spend with McLucas, but also that Chen is a pharmacist with
the authority to order lab tests, add or change medications, and otherwise
help oversee patient care...
